I was inspired by reading the life of Joan of Arc by Samuel Clements a few years ago. He spent twelve years of his life writing her story. He lived in northern France for two years doing research.

The idea that a very young girl could walk into the castles of northern France and say, "I can save this country," is nothing less than remarkable.

Limited palette, white black, red and yellow ochre. A limited palette can give a painting a sense of harmony, and this was my hope for this painting.

St. Joan of Arc

I have always been drawn to complimentary colors, especially blue and orange. The model for this painting lives next door. She was the same age Joan of Arc was when she was called to defend her country against the English. Samuel Clemens spent twelve years of his life writing her story. He lived in northern France for two years doing research.
