The American Bison

I am moved each time I am in the presence of these iconic animals, and had that feeling again while painting this piece. It now hangs over our stone fireplace. Although I have many references, my friend, Tim Irwin, author of an upcoming history of the buffalo, generously gave me this reference.

High Roaming Cinnamon Bear

Found above 3000 feet elevation, males can travel 40 mile a day, are great climbers, and can live to the age of 25. The bear represents strength, healing and deep spiritual guardianship.

The Pioneer

Some cougars leave the Black Hills migrating eastward looking for mates. The Minnesota DNR refers to these magnificent animals as “pioneers.” This portrait was painted in response to the sighting my wife had during a dark, rainy afternoon near Owatonna. She observed the large cat stalking down the side of a wind blown ravine toward a creek. This rare encounter left her breathless.

Yellowstone Trumpeter

The Trumpeter gracefully glides across the water with an attitude of regal self assurance. Taking off, it first patters along the top of the water. Its call sounds like a loud brass instrument. I've never heard anything like it.
